UPDATE November 29, 2009
Geileis (Gay-leeh) is a black & tan female Border Collie. Gay is around 1 1/2 years old. This little female is one of the last 19 dogs that have come to Omaha from Oklahoma. To read more about the "Oklahoma Dogs click here
Gay is now available for adoption. She will need a patient home that will continue to work with her and help her reach her full potential. Gay has made great progress in the last few weeks (and past two months in rescue). Her main issue continues to be that she is slow to bond to people. She has never seen a large amount of value in being touched/petted by humans. She is improving steadily and we are continuing to work with her on this.
Gay has made some great strides and feeling more comfortable in a domestic situation. She is a smart little lady and has given her new situation a lot of thought. She is not as timid, as she is strong willed. She is still hesitant about human touch, but will tolerate it and is improving everyday. She has gone from “NO WAY”, to “Just for a minute”, to “Ok, but I’m still not sure about that”. She is not timid, but cautious. She will still move away if you walk directly towards her with any speed. If you go slowly, she will usually stick around to see if anything good is coming her way. She will now come towards a person she knows for a treat.
Although Gay has been very slow to bond to people, she is starting to learn that human touch can be good! She allows petting on her back or side. She usually allows a little petting around her neck without moving away (previously she would quickly turn away). She may even enjoy having her rear end scratched. :) She will also allow someone she knows to SLOWLY and gently take her by her collar, and clip on her leash or long line. She has also recently taken treats from complete strangers while sitting in her open wire crate. Gay is pretty food-motivated and this helps with getting her used to new things and is helping build more value for being touched by people.
Gay has become pretty comfortable in the house. She now spends very little time in her crate even though it is open for her. She has also started following her people to see where they go in the house - she doesn’t follow too closely, but enough to see where you’ve gone. Gay does like to be in the same area as people though. She has carried her bone into the living room to chew while tv watching was going on. She also laid up against the couch the other day while a person was sitting on it. Gay respects the other dogs and loves to play with her 4yr old BC sister! They play in the yard and in the house, running around and having a blast. She is still much a puppy when she plays and is pretty goofy. She also loves to play with visiting Border Collies, both male and female. It only took one correction from her 9 yr old sister to learn that her older sister does not care to play. Gay will sometimes run after and pick up a thrown tennis ball, then she usually drops it soon after. She has also been playing with the tennis ball by herself (when no one is “watching”). She throws it around a bit and teases the other dogs trying to get them to play more (Gay loves to play!) Gay recently started carrying her tennis ball around - in one case all day long!
Gay is starting to have a recall with people she knows, but not in the usual sense. Gay will come about 40-50% of the time when she is called “Gay, come on”, but she hesitates to come all the way to the person right away. She will do this as long as she knows ther person. We are working with her on this. She walks well on leash and she will walk beside her foster mom in the yard off leash with some coaxing.
She has earned the liberty of running free in the yard, as long as she drags a 6 foot leash. When the other dogs are called to come in the house she will trot right along with them and come in for a treat. She is quick to learn a routine, but still thinks it through before acting. Gay is crate trained and so far she has not had any accidents in the house. She enjoys a soft place to lay whether it is a blanket in her crate or the rug in front of the sink. She likes to play in the outside water bowl sometimes, but has never played in the water bowl inside, good girl! She recently started doing "puppy things" like "sneaking" away with and chewing on items she shouldn't. While we love seeing this personality coming out, Gay is quickly learning to chew on proper things like bones and nylabones - she loves chewing on her nylabones! She has already learned that if she is bored, she can go lay in her crate and chew on a bone.
The jury is still out on Gay and cats. She is very curious about the house cat and keeps an eye on him at all times. Gay does show some stalking behavior around the cat now (just the stance, no movement). She has not shown aggression, but she is always supervised with the cat.
Gay is quick to spot and react when a rabbit dares to enter her yard. She is very focused on rabbits outside the yard. Gay has not tried to go over the four-foot wood and chain link fences, however she did find a weak spot in the chain link and scooted under it twice. Gay is a smart girl and went back to the same spot in the fence. (the fence has been secured now) Gay will need a secure fence in her forever home to keep her safe; especially considering her 'love' of rabbits.
Gay is very intelligent and determined. She squeezed through the (“fixed”) fence again - through a 6 inch diameter hole - and ended up in the neighbors yard. I called her “Gay!, come here, lets go, come Gay!” and to my amazement, Gay wiggled back through the fence and trotted onto the deck (where she got a big handful of yummy jerky treats)!
Gay has certainly made some wonderful progress! Her biggest hurdle is continuing to learn to trust humans and that people mean good things. While she loves other dogs, she is only very slowly bonding with her foster mom (not for lack of trying!) Gay is a neat and very smart dog. She’s going to be a great dog for someone. She will need a patient home that can continue to work with her and help her reach her full potential. She would probably do best in a home with another dog who likes to play.
