"MAIDA"
(380) October 2009

Maida (MAY-da) fits her name perfectly - she is a "shy girl". She has a beautiful long coat, black with hints of red, and a nice blaze on her forehead. She has three "socks" and then one paw that is primarily white. That is her "posing paw" for when she is interested in something.

Maida needs a patient owner, as she is always hesitant to try new things. It takes a little bit before she will eat around new people, go to the bathroom in a new place, etc. But once she learns that she's safe, she warms up nicely. It takes her longer to warm up to men than women. She likes to "nudge" rather than lick, and will allow petting but always checks first to see if you have a treat in your hand. She learned her name quickly and will respond to it. She does well on a leash and doesn't pull very much. She hasn't been trained on any commands yet but seems to be a fast learner and would probably pick up commands quickly. She is a fence jumper, so she would need a taller fence, be supervised the whole time, or be tied on a lead (though if she is tied, she doesn't play or try to go to the bathroom as much.)

While she is mostly house trained, she does try to go inside if it is a new place. She only had two accidents indoors at her previous foster home, and then quickly learned that outside was the only place she was allowed to go.

Maida gets along well with other dogs as long as she can be the "dominant" dog, and likes to run and play a little. She also got along fine with the resident cats in a previous foster home. She is quiet and will only bark if something is very important, like if you forget to feed her. She is jumpy around fast movements and shows a bit of a herding instinct, so she'd do better in a home without young children. But her demeanor is wonderful and she is very gentle and sweet around the people she gets to know. She will make a wonderful pet.
