Update 11/12/2009 Rodiadh aka Roddy is a male black/white border collie. He is 2 1/2 years old. Roddy is a sweet boy. Although it is hard to tell in some of the photos, Roddy is a taller BC, measuring around 21-22" at the shoulder. Roddy is very people oriented and would really love to be a lap dog - although as he’s a tall guy, so he’s a bit big for that! :) Roddy loves his people! Roddy is good with other dogs and likes to play, however he can be a bit intimidating to other dogs - He sometimes plays a little rough but he is not aggressive. Roddy is crate trained and likes a wire crate better than an airline (plastic) crate. He is good in his crate at night, but if given the choice he would rather watch over you at night sleeping with you. He is housetrained as well. Roddy has made good progress on his recall and has a great "sit". He walks ok on leash but barks at bicyclists. Some more obedience would be helpful in this aspect. We are working with him on other obedience commands, he is very smart and has frequently identified and retrieved the object he was told to get Football, Kong or Bone. He does very well at the very large dog park in our community and loves to play there with his Chuckit long-distance tennis ball thrower, he is very fast and at the dog park only a Greyhound has been able to keep up with him. Roddy would play fetch with a tennis ball all day long if you let him! He loves toys and hasn't shown to be destructive with them. He also has a large rubber ball that he is intensly focused on in typical border collie fashion. He does appreciate chew bones of the sturdy variety for powerful chewers, also loves to play in water. Roddy is very athletic and has alot of potential for dog sports. We would love to see him go to a home where he could become an agility star. He likes to have a job to do, is people oriented, and loves toys - all things that would make him alot of fun to train in agility. He has also been confident since the very first day he came into rescue. Other dogs are usually nervous or scared when coming into a new environment. Not Roddy! He sat in the front of his kennel, relaxed but intently watching everybody as if asking “Ok, what are we going to do now?” Roddy would do best in a home with at least some Border Collie Experience. He needs an active home and has great potential in the hands of an experienced trainer. Roddy was recently herding tested. He has some interest, but he's pretty raw and will take a lot of work, he was really into chasing the sheep. He has some potential but would need to go to a very experienced sheepherder for training. We would prefer to see him go into a home where he could train in agility and other play-oriented training. He might like to do chore work on a farm with an experienced border collie person. (and what BC wouldn’t?) Roddy is also an excellent watchdog and will definitely let you know if something is going on outside the house. While his height, intense "eye" contact (demonstrated in one particular photo here) and demeanor can appear quite intimidating to strangers, at heart he is a lover that believes he is the lapdog. Roddy will do best in an active home, living as an only dog or with a tolerant female. One who can hold her own in rough play. This boy needs a job! Whether it is prolonged play with an active family or some kind of dog sport, this guy wants and needs to be active. Roddy is a love bug and loves to play! He's a great dog with a lot of potential for someone who will invest the time in his training. Roddy is currently being fostered in Des Moines, Iowa. Roddy has a VIDEO on YouTube!
